Does your kid practice piano independently?

My 7-yo does practice daily and sometimes will be at the piano for an hour going over pieces past and present. Since we have had no formal music instruction, we can't offer criticism - constructive or otherwise. He is obsessed with getting a "good" for every piece from his teacher, which makes him practice hard.
