my situation is little different, being an immigrant thought, ADHD give disqualifies.
I know my son has all symptoms, from school teachers complained about attention problems but no one told me that we should get diagnosed and it is not a problem. yesterday we found out with psychologist after the WISC, that he has ADHD and he will be accommodated. Now to diagnose there are so many appointments and procedure. Is there any way that we can put the info of ADHD problem in the appeal letter? They accept only final diagnosis of ADHD. We dont have time. Do base school also have accommodation for ADHD kids? He got 127. thank you all for the info. javascript:void(0); |
Yes. You will want to include the new WISC scores and report as part of your appeal. Also include a letter by you, detailing the new ADHD finding, explaining you are now setting up appointments re this new diagnosis. You may also want to reach out to the AART and the school counselor at your school so you can start the process for 504 accommodations. Good luck! |
FCPS counts on individual parents not suing because of the cost and hassle involved. Class action suit anyone? That may get some attention to the plight of 2E kids in FCPS AAP. |
I didn't know that there was a "plight." My 2e kids are getting excellent supports at Centers. Better than the supports at the base school, probably because the Center administrators and teachers understand 2e. No issues getting 504s for ADHD/gifted, or in enforcing them. But this is FCPS, so YMMV. |
You can't get an ADHD diagnoses based off a WISC alone. I think you mean there is suspicion of ADHD and you will do further testing to see if it is ADHD. You do not have a diagnosis. You probably have a Dr. saying due to the breakdown of the scores (processing may be very low compared to FSIQ) they suspect ADHD and you need to do further testing. You can say that in a letter but I'm not sure how far it gets you. My DS was suspected of ADHD based on WISC. Further testing revealed he did not have ADHD. He did have perfectionism though. |
This has not been my experience. There are many kids in AAP that have ADHD. Dr. Horn can say whatever she wants to, but if a child scores high enough and is found eligible, by law, they are entitled to the services. The CogAT is given over a period of three days, so it's not impossible for an ADHD kid to sit through. Also, because the WISC is an individual test, that sometimes is helpful to kids who are easily distracted. OP, have your child do the WISC, and see what the results are. |
+1000 Great post! (In addition, I seriously doubt Dr. Horn said what was posted by the PP.) |
