I (the pp you were responding to) have an openly gay son and openly gay friends. I probably know closeted gays, but am not aware of anyone specific. I wish our society made it easy to come out of the closet, but given reality, I think that I have to be pro-choice on this. Just as I wish there were no abortions, but support a woman's right to choose, I wish everyone were out of the closet, but accept their right to live their lives as they wish. Being out of the closet is no protection from AIDS, so I am not sure I see the reasoning there, for whatever that's worth. By the way, is the evidence about Crist really strong enough to rely on? It's basically hearsay, isn't it? |
Are you actually saying that it is morally wrong to be in the closet? Do you really think that all gays have to declare themselves to be gay, regardless of what discrimination they may face from their families, co-workers, and their communities? It's tough enough being gay. A person shouldn't have to hide, but they should not have to wear an armband either. |
No, I'm not. I think it is morally wrong to be in the closet while simultaneously voting against marriage equality legislation in order to gain protective coloring with the right wing. I also think it is wrong to be in the closet and continue to have sex with men while having sex with women. I think the latter is especially wrong for married men or those who are in otherwise "monogamous" relationships. In the latter case, I have seen women become infected with HIV by a husband who is having sex with men. I have seen women die in these cases. It is morally wrong. Sorry. If you're gay and in the closet and not voting for anti-gay legislation and not having sex with women, fine. No problem. |
Well I agree with the part about not voting for gay marriage, but you didn't mention that in your post. Were you saying that Crist has been having anonymous sex or infecting a partner? If not, aren't you being a little bit prejudiced by assuming that he is sexually indiscriminate because (you assume) he is a closet homosexual? |
Look, I assume that anyone posting under this topic has at least minimal knowledge of Crist's history, including his legislative history. If you want to argue, go see "Outrage" and then come back and tell me what you think. The film makes a very careful and compelling case for what I'm saying here. And try working clinically with people with HIV, as I have for 15 years, and then come back and argue with me. |
No, you don't get to post "I'm an expert and you are not" on an anonymous message board to defend your POV. You haven't answered the two questions: Were you saying that Crist has been having anonymous sex or infecting a partner? If not, are you saying that closeted homosexuals are generally sexually indiscriminate? Once again, I don't like gay politicians voting against gay rights. But you are making assertions that have nothing to do with that issue. Instead I think you are implying promiscuity on either Crist's part or on the part of closeted gays as a whole. The first I don't know about but maybe you do. The second I consider to be prejudiced. |
In regard to your first bolded point, I am saying that there is compelling evidence that Crist is gay, as documented by the film "Outrage" and by other sources. I am also saying that sexual orientation is usually not changed by marriage. Among gay journalists and bloggers, and to the (straight) filmmaker who produced "Outrage," there is a belief that Crist is a hypocrite because of his support for Florida's Amendment 2. His recent marriage is often considered to be part of his strategy to seek higher office, including the presidency. In regard to your second point, no, I am not saying all closeted gays are sexually indiscriminate. What I'm saying is that many closeted gay men who are married continue to have unprotected sex with their wives will also having sexual contact with men. In politics, the best known example is probably Jim McGreevy, the former governor of New Jersey. If I've offended you, I apologize. |
9:42 here" "will also" should be "while also." Sorry. |
