How much for teens to charge for snow shoveling?

A few years ago some neighborhood boys wanted to charge me a large amount ($25 per kid oer hour) to shovel my long driveway. Had they not said so much, I would have used them. The problem with a group of kids like this is that they all want a piece. If 4 boys worked, expecting $25 a kid isn't reasonable And i could see from my window they took a lot of breaks. (Breaks are fine...unless you are paying someone during that time) Have the. Charge a fair rte per driveway not hour.

I have a short driveway. I also can not shovel -- heart condition. In the 2009-2010 blizzards, we paid $25 to be shoveled.

In the 2016 blizzard, I was prepared to shovel, but our neighbors (Mormons, who make the best neighbors) shoveled us out and refused money. (by 2016, my medical condition was well known, with multiple ambulance visits and hospitalizations).

I second the vote to charge by the job, not by the hour. But roughly I'd pay $15/hour, and if there were two or more kids, I'd pay each somewhere between $10-15/hour.

PARENTS AND TEEN SHOVELERS: PLEASE BE SURE THE SHOVELERS DO NOT USE THE SHOVEL TO SCRAPE SNOW OFF CARS!!!! A kid in our neighborhood offered to clear off our cars. We asked him if he had a brush and he showed us his brush, but then at some point he switched to using his shovel. We didn't see it until he was gone, and we discovered SCRATCHES all over our cars. SO pissed. >

Right - charge by the job, that will eliminate the breaks.

Agree. $20-$25 for what should take an hour. While that's a high hourly rate for a teen, it's hard work in the cold (and well worth it not to have to do it myself!)

ah...I remember the 2016 blizzard. Had to shovel for my neighbor all by myself who shared the driveway with us because she was stuck with two young children while her husband was on business trip, and my wife had to also take care of our young toddler. My compensation was a a flask of Sheridan's Coffee Liqueur--much more appreciated than cash in that weather lol...

What exactly are they shoveling? So far in the DMV we’ve only had a dusting.

In college a friend offered to clean the snow off my car. When I went out there the roof had long deep scratches in it. I asked him what he used to get the snow off and he said "my hands." From there on out my best friend refered to him as Danny Shovelhands.

This post was revived from the 2016 blizzard. Odd timing as we go into a weekend in the 50s.

Shoveling snow is hard work. I'd quote based on the job, though, rather than by the hour. That way the kids have an incentive to finish faster. Clearing a car for $20 seems reasonable. Clearing a driveway + sidewalk for $100 seems like a good price too, if there is a lot of snow and it will take a few hours.

$100 sounds cheap. During last year's heaviest storm, I was quoted $380 for my driveway, just for that storm. They were using a plow to push the snow, not shoveling. They claimed they would plow once very 4 inches. I didn't want to pay so shoveled the driveway myself. Took me 3 days to clear the driveway. Should have paid the $380. If it is $100, I will throw in a 6 pack.

That is nor realistic. In a big snow storm we expect to pay around $500-$600 to dig out the driveway. In a smaller storm about half that. We can handle a few inches ourselves. Our driveway is about 70 feet. It's cheaper than a doctor bill or missing work.

Same here in Mclean, The teen quoted me for $25 for the whole drive way. It took him 1.5 hours and I paid him $125.
