NP here, just want to ask if all the success stories here are about ADHD kids ( and not ASD) ? |
| For both me (I was diagnosed a few years ago) and my child, medication has been a life-changer. It has not been a magic bullet in the sense that all of the issues disappeared and it's like we don't have ADHD at all, but the medication gave us the ability to finally put into action all of the tools we'd been trying to develop before we tried medication. |

A combination of the right medication, a behavior management system coordinated with school, and a good therapist is working for us. It's not perfect. Our son still doesn't love school and is performing slightly below where we'd like him to be, but his social experience and academic progress are better than they were before the dx, and his behavior at home is about a million times better. The difference when he does not take his medication is dramatic but the medication alone was not a "silver bullet."
Good luck, OP. |
| What is CBT? |
We have a psychologist at Georgetown. Basically we tell her the behaviors that the teacher and we observe and she works on them. This is great for things like impulsiveness, calling out, etc. |
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on exploring relationships among a person's thoughts, feelings and behaviors. During CBT a therapist will actively work with a person to uncover unhealthy patterns of thought and how they may be causing self-destructive behaviors and beliefs. By addressing these patterns, the person and therapist can work together to develop constructive ways of thinking that will produce healthier behaviors and beliefs. For instance, CBT can help someone replace thoughts that lead to low self-esteem ("I can't do anything right") with positive expectations ("I can do this most of the time, based on my prior experiences"). |
| What is the youngest you can do cbt? |
it really depends on the maturity level of the child because the child will have to do the actual behavior modifications, and in order to do them they will need to recognize when they're doing them. I would say 10+ |
| Is there behavioral therapy you can do for 5 year old (Adhd only) that is covered by insurance? |
