scary virus for those planning travel to Latin America or the Caribbean

Uh, Donald Trump's wall doesn't exist.

PP was making a joke about Donald Trump's wall (a bit of levity for a frightening illness).

How paternalistic of him.

I'm 22 weeks and supposed to go to Mexico for 3 days next week... Cancel?!?!?

Well he is her father so, yeah, paternalism sounds about right...

That said, feel free to fight "the man" by going to the Caribbean, Mexico, India or Indonesia while pregnant. These articles are just "fear mongering," right? Enjoy!

Check out the CDC link for Mexico Zika above. I think it depends where you're going. So far, looks like just a few isolated cases in non-touristy places.

Don't go. Easy

Unfortunately it's not always that 'easy' to not go. If you're going on a babymoon you can cancel, but a lot of people in DC have jobs that involve travel to Latin American countries and with the exception of Brazil it's hard to justify canceling trips if you spend most of your time attending meetings indoors.

And the CDC just issued the warning for pregnant women to avoid 13 Latin American and Caribbean countries plus Puerto Rico (there's a new NYT story online tonight). The CDC moved fast in this case...

Don't go. You can't control Mosquitos.

I think the point was that the doctor's daughter is (presumably) a grown woman who makes her own decisions and doesn't need her father's permission to travel.

However, what the doctor in the NYT article ACTUALLY said was, "“If my daughter was planning to get pregnant, I’d advise her not to go the Caribbean."

Umm I thought CDC is saying to avoid travel to areas with local transmission if at all possible, including Puerto Rico?

I myself am headed to Puerto Rico and will use the precautions advised by the CDC. I will not be near standing water - near the ocean with a breeze. Until the CDC says not to travel there, I'll keep my plans.

Puerto Rico has confirmed cases, unlike most of the rest of the carribean.
