Getting birth certificate in DC

DC does not mail them automatically — they aren't free, after all. Request online or go to the office. I went to pick mine up and it was fairly painless.

Just make sure they spell your kids name correctly! They misspelled ours and the guy was so lazy he wasn't going to change it until my husband said he wouldn't leave until they changed it!!
