OP here...I wanted to report back. We had a wonderful time in Vegas. This is what we did during our week there:
Hoover Dam (amazing!)
took a tour to the Grand Canyon on Christmas Day (it snowed there for about 15 minutes and then cleared up pretty fast for a gorgeous view)
rented a car one day and went to Ethel M chocolate factory and the Red Rock Canyon (did some hiking there)
walked up and down the strip both during the day and at night to catch all the free show offerings at the different hotels
went to Fremont Street area
went to a couple of magic and comedy shows
spent time at our resort (Marriott) that had tons of free activities during the day. Also spent some time in the hot tub and heated pool.

I was surprised at how many kids there were. Some really tiny... in strollers. Yes I saw the people handing out little cards but they never handed them out to us as we were a family. Yes, my son did comment on the Girls to You billboard. The most R rated was probably the Fremont Street area where there were scantily clad dancers.

All in all, a good time was had. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Thank you for the reporting back! We're thinking of taking our 11 year old and this was a huge help!

I am a Vegas lover and have been many times with my DH, but I still am baffled by the people who bring kids and let them run around the casinos a 3am. It's very depressing. It's just not a place for kids, e.g., legal prostitution flyers handed out on the streets, open containers and people walking around drunk. Why, people?

I agree.

But if you are going, take him to see Ka. It is friggin amazing, and tye martial arts and battle scenes will really appeal to a boy of that age.
