She lived in the UK from ages 1-11 and she's lived in London That's pretty significant. Her accent and her passport are a "thing" Anderson is bidialectal. With her English accent and background, she was mocked and felt out of place in the American Midwest and soon adopted a Midwestern accent. To this day, her accent depends on her location, as she easily shifts between her American and English accents.[24] In May 2013, during an interview with BlogTalkRadio, Anderson addressed the matter of her national identity: "I've been asked whether I feel more like a Brit than an American and I don't know what the answer to that questions is. I know that I feel that London is home and I'm very happy with that as my home. I love London as a city and I feel very comfortable there. In terms of identity, I'm still a bit baffled."[25] --wikipedia |
| PP here- she's lived in london since 2003. |

She may have lived in England as a child and moved there again as an adult, but she's not British. I lived there as a child as well (American parents, just like her) and don't speak with a British accent. I hate it when people pretend they've got an accent - Madonna also comes to mind. Gwyneth Paltrow - like her or hate her - has a fantastic English accent for movie roles, but not once has she ever feigned an accent in real life. She's American and doesn't try to pretend otherwise.

She is consistent with accent but EVERY British accent she does is so affected.
Did you ever notice that actual British people don't vary their accents wildly when they play different roles. She was dreadful in Great Expectations and annoying in the Fall. Her Lady Dedlock was passable; it was most like her Scully voice just British. The most damning thing though, she kept doing "duck face" throughout Bleak House. Dickens is rolling in his grave.
Lady Dedlock is a tortured soul trying to remain aloof to hide her pain and secret, not be a Duck Face meme which she magnificently captures. Death to the duck face. |
You are so right. She does duck face throughout "The Fall" too. She's a good actress, but there's something about her that's always annoyed me. It's like she takes herself so seriously... I used to LOVE Fox Mulder but not be so crazy about her. |
| Just started watching it. I'm enjoying it thus far, but I'm a fan of Jamie Dornan, especially when he has his shirt off... |
PP, did you finish both seasons yet? I just finished last night and need to discuss, but I'll start a spoilers thread if anyone's up for it! |
