Does your federal agency require lunch?

Have tio take 30 minute lunch if you work more than 6 hours. Some managers will an occaissional skip lunch leave early but some will not. I never take lunch but am sure I waste time during the day.

OP here. My friend is very adamant that it's a new change at her work and that they don't have a union. I'm not sure I believe it, but want to hold out hope.


I'm at a DoD agency and they've done away with the mandatory lunch period. Employees may take it if they so choose, but are no longer required. However, they may not use it at the end of their shift in order to leave early.

Must work 8.5 hrs a day, whether you eat or not is up to you.

We work 5/4/9 CWS so in general our workday is 9.5 hours. I don't always leave my desk for lunch but as a PP I likely waste enough time talking to coworkers etc. during the day to make up for it.

I'm confused. Do you mean that you are required to be at work for 8.5 hours but don't have to take a lunch break? Or that can choose to be at work for only 8 hours if you skip a lunch break?

Ours requires the lunch break. You can work through it but can't leave early if you do.

They worry about it because no one, white or blue collar, is paid for the required lunch break, and they want to make sure they get their 8 hours of work for which they pay. It saves the government money.

If you work 6 or more hours, you have to be given a meal break no less than 30 minutes and no more than 1 hour. You are not paid for that time. At my agency, the meal break is 45 minutes. So, I have to work 8 hours and during that time take 45 minutes of unpaid time. Which means that my tour of duty is 9 -5:45 pm. It is up to the agencies as to whether the meal period can be taken at the end or the beginning of your scheduled work day; my agency forbids it.

If OP were to dig down, she will learn that her agency permits people to take their meal period at the end of the day, provided they don't take one at any other time. So while her official tour of duty may be 9 am to 5:30 pm, as a practical matter it is 9 am to 5 pm.

No sorry. We're absolutely forbidden to take lunch at the end of the work day. We all work 8-4:30 or 8-5:30 depending on schedule. My timecard must read "8-5:30" even though I didn't eat lunch that day.
