Budget beach vacation

Topsail isn't on the Outer Banks, it's further south, just north of Wilmington. But it's great, we go every year. Not sure with your budget but look on the southern tip of the island. The beaches are wide and family friendly.

Topsail beach actually isn't part of the OBX.

it is a good beach suggestion for OP, but he/she needs to realize where they'd be headed if they looked into Topsail.

IT is cheaper b/c it is a longer drive, but I bet OP could get a 2 or 3 BR oceanfront condo in her price range that week.

There are a couple of condo complexes that people seem to like - Croatan Surf Club? We liked places that had a community pool but not a private pool because we were paranoid about little kids drowning when they we napping age. Honestly we used to try and get them to nap on the beach under a towel.

Everybody has to drive to the beach on Chincoteague. Get something with a water view so you can enjoy a drink on the deck at naptime.

The mosquitoes and biting flies on Chincoteague are the worst, though.

You can definitely get something within that budget. This summer we went to Hilton Head Island and got a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom condo that slept 6 people for $850 for a week in August. The beach was within walking distance, but we rode our bikes, which was more fun. . ( i know you said you wanted to drive 7 hrs tops.. but in case you can't find something you like.. ).

And just FYI it is pronounced "TOPsull" not "top-sail" if you have to speak it at some point.

If you are open to camping, you could camp at Assateague for way under your budget. And be right on the beach, too.

Colonial beach is a river beach on the Potomac within that budget. It is a golf cart town, meaning you can rent a cart & drive it on most of the roads. http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/virginia/chesapeake-bay/colonial-beach

Have you considered someplace like Lake Anna?

Carolina beach is pretty cheap. It was about a 5 hour drive.

This is exactly the area we visit. Quiet, all the houses are close to the beach, but still a very short drive to restaurants, shopping, etc. You should be able to find something under $1500 towards the mid to end of August, definitely for a 3 bedroom, but maybe a 4 bedroom as well.

We stay in a 2 bedroom condo on the ocean block at Rehoboth for $1600. And it's a beautiful place. I just called up a realtor, told him our budget and he sent us a few options.

You can get 2 bedrooms on the bayside of OC around 120th street within your budget. You can walk to the beach.

Chincoteague is also definitely possible. As someone said, you have to drive to the beach, but it's a fun town and the beach isn't far.
