Do I have to be ready for trick-or-treaters all day tomorrow?

I'm wondering the same thing.

Bell rings, answer door, give out candy. What kind of readiness preparation do you need for this???

Take the candy out of the car, find the candy bowl from last year in the basement and wash it. Put candy in the bowl by the front porch. All of which is not getting done until 5:30 pm at the earliest because before that I am carting kids around to their soccer games.

If I have candy at 10:00 am, I will start gorging on it at 10:03. I'm planning to buy my candy in the afternoon!

I wouldn't worry about being prepared until about an hour or so before darkness hits.

However I live in CA, perhaps on the East Coast people do it differently.

I have never seen anyone in costume, ringing doorbells during the day though.

You people do realize that it's not a Whenever you want thing, right? Each town/jurisdiction has their own hours.

No, we're not over scheduled in the DCUM area (at least on this one issue). The local jurisdictions say absolutely nothing about ToT hours.

It is usually after sundown (6-ish) until about 8-ish), but a lot of that is because people work. It is tempting to ask on a weekend if people might be planning for a little earlier. I'm still taking my kid out around 7.

I just typed in my town + ToT + 2015 and the official hours popped right up.

This is the first I've heard that jurisdictions actually get involved in setting "official" hours. Someone on my listserv sent around a question the other day asking about the official hours and I thought that was odd. As far as I'm aware in the midwestern town I grew up in, kids went out whenever they wanted, usually right after dusk for young kids and an hour or two later for older ones. And people decided when they wanted to turn off their lights and no longer give out candy. No officials getting involved.

I just googled my own town and the only thing that popped up was a press release with safety tips. No official hours listed.

People question the date and time constantly.

Its ON Halloween (that was a different thread) but NO its NOT all day. It starts right around when it gets dark out.

I truly do not understand why this is so difficult.

Some people move from ass-backwards places like Columbus or Buffalo, where they have "beggars night."

This year, trick-or-treating was for one hour last night in Ohio.

Every other place where I have lived has had ToT on a weekend night regardless of when Oct 31 fell. And they set hours. So much better than this crap around here where no one is quite sure what to do. Way more fun and festive to have everyone out for the same 2 hour block and every house is ready and participating.

I also grew up in the Midwest, and we had official hours. In fact, hours for the towns in the area were listed either on the local news, or the newspaper.

Guess it must be a regional thing, because this is definitely not the practice where we live. What happens when kids do outside the official hours? Do they receive citations? This is a serious question. Who is enforcing this?

I don't think it's meant to be enforced, it's so people know when to be home to hand out the candy.
It would, you know, make this thread not necessary.

Not everywhere. In the South maybe, but in several NE cities that I've lived in/visited/have friends in, it's before it gets dark. Ideally, the goal is to finish as it's getting dark.
