Sleeping in day clothes - normal?

Anonymous
I may not go as far as saying its truly unhygienic or unsafe in some way, but it's certainly dirty. These clothes have been sitting on and leaning against chairs, steps, tables and wherever else that is in the public and you know it's not clean...

My 15 yr old DS insists on taking a shower every night before bed and has been doing this since he was little. He says he doesn't sleep as well without a shower, but he also has sports practice after school and is usually pretty stinky when he gets home. Since it's a no-go for me to have the sheets changed every day since I think it's a waste of laundry and time, I don't want him crawling into bed with his nasty sweat and dirt from the day. Shower and then bed is his routine.

Even if the clothing from the day works for your son I would wonder whether he is really set up to have a good night's sleep. I know it may sound silly, but I believe having a good evening routine will help in getting quality sleep. We all did it when they were babies and toddlers, why should it stop when they are older? I know I am a bit thrown off when I don't have my normal routine at night...just a thought...that's where I would be be concerned (even if I think sleeping in the day's clothes is dirty).

Lots of very hygiene oriented folks here! Did you change your kids clothes before naps each time? Do you wash each item of clothing you wear each time you wear it?

Your 14yr old is jerking off in the shower. Please stop acting like he wants to be clean.

I do and so do my teen kids.

My son would go to bed in the clothes he wanted to wear to school the next day to "save time" in the morning

15 year old DS does this

My 8-year-old does this but he usually changes into his next day's fresh clothes so he's ready for school. I wish my 13-year-old would do this! He's always late.

All those little crumbs of food on their clothes feed dust mites I believe. Then again, so does their skin flakes. In any case I wouldn't allow it. It could set up a bad life long habit. It's good for the body to breathe at night and not be constricted IMO. It's a good organizational skill to end the day with getting sleep clothes on. I know someone who has a hoarding disorder and she slept in her clothes as a kid.

Both my son and daughter used to sleep in their clothes and while my mother thought it was disgusting it did not bother me. However, my daughter has pretty bad seasonal allergies and the allergist said it was very important to shower at night and at least rinse her hair so all of the allergens she came in contact with during the day were not transferred to her bed.

My 13 year olds on does this. He bathes every evening and puts on clean sweats or shorts and t shirt to sleep in. No big deal. He is generally very aware of proper hygiene. His sister, who is his twin, prefers night clothes.

It's bad if they have allergies because they are bringing dander, pollen, etc into the bed with them

My 52 yo DH does this once in awhile and has since I first met him in college. It's mostly after a couple of bourbons ?
