I agree with the pp. My husband (aged 38) gave up smoking and gained 20lbs even though he runs several miles every day and eats healthily. He had smoked for 24 years and I do believe his body was used to the increased metabolism from smoking and now that's gone he has gained weight. The good thing is a good friend of mine (aged 42) gave up smoking and also gained about 15-20 lbs but as her body got used to its new metabolism and coupled with the fact that she is a healthy eater anyway, the weight eventually fell off but it did take about a year for the whole thing to resolve itself. I often use this story to encourage my husband because he can't figure out what else to do so I just tell him to give it time and it should resolve. I know this is purely anecdotal but I really do think its the giving up smoking. |
Try eating nothing. Seems to be working for Tori Spelling! |
I have read a little bit about the smoking and metabolism thing - but criminy....I am finally quitting - why am I now cursed with additional weight on a body that wasn't phenomenal to start with???? Blech! I will try upping the protein in the morning and additional exercise...it just is lousy because the exercise is either Shredding at 530am or the gym after 830pm!
I can do this i can do this I can do this I can do this...and i will weigh my food... Thanks all - it is just very difficult to not become discouraged - as I imagine many of us are aware of... |
OP- consider a calorie and exercise (and string online community) website like sparkpeople- it's great and FREE.. give it a chance.. Also- keep at it- I was a plateau and am now finally seeing a budge in the scale.. <sigh> |
The answer is VERY simple. You need to cut calories. That is it. That is the ONLY way to lose weight. The person who said your caloric intake seems low is buying into complete diet loss myths, but myths that have become very prevalent. That is absolutely wrong. It is all about calories in. If you want to weigh 130 lbs, for instance, you should eat roughly 1,300 calories a day. The more calories you cut, the more weight you will lose and then you eat the amount of calories each day equal to what you want to weigh. Its actually that simple. I would guess that your problem is probably the grapenuts and oatmeal. A breakfast with higher protein may help you feel fuller longer, eat lunch later anbd then have a smaller dinner. Also, look at what you are drinking. Liquid calories are the most "dangerous" because people don't notice them. Lastly, be really careful of what you are eating for dinner - decrease the portion size. |
Not OP here but wanted to know where you came up with 1300 calories.. |
Grapenuts actually have a LOT of calories. Read the box. Cereal is not a good way to lose weight because people are used to eating a bowlful and a portion size is actually a cup or even a half a cup. A much better breakfast for a diet is eggs (protein). |
My doctor told me to use this (weight ideal x x 10) as a rough guide. He is an MD and PhD, Harvard & Duke educated, used to be a general practitioner, but is now strictly a bariactric doctor as weight loss has been his specialty for over 30 years. He is very well respected in the bariatric world. |
Once you reach your goal how many cals can you eat? In other words, is the diet just to get that excess off and then you can up the daily cal intake a little bit (so you arent deprived!!! 1300 is not much).
I am almost 6 feet tall. If I only ate 1300 I would be very sleeeeepy! |
My goal is 110- at that formula I'd be going below the 1200 minimum recommended.. any feedback from your doctor on the minimums? |
Yes, my MD says that most of the weight guidelines and food intake (pyramids, etc...) guidelines in the United States are incorrect, erring on the side of too much (weight and food). Ideally from a health prespective, your waist circumference should be half of your height. Of course, if you are naturally an exaggerated pear shape, that would have to be recalibrated. Each person's ideal weigh is something they should really discuss with their doctor but it is likely less than most Americans would think. Also, I think someone misunderstood, if you want to weigh 130 lbs you don't eat 1300 to LOSE weight, you eat 1300 to MAINTAIN your weight at 130. So, if you currently weigh 160, you could eat 1300 cal/day and you would eventually weigh 130 lbs. Or, if you want to lose it more quickly, eat less, say 1,000 cal/day until; you reach your goal weight and then eat that amt of calories per day to maintain. As long as you are meeting your bodies nutritiuonal needs, there is no actual number of calories one has to eat. I am telling you, most of the dieting and body weight information that is generally accepted as truth by the American public, is nothing but myth. The truth is that skinnier is usually healthier (we are not talking about anorexia or bulimia here as those are disease in whoich your body's nutritional needs are ignored). Also, the older you get the fewer calories your body needs. Have you noticed that the US is not only one of the only countries in the world where older people tend to be fat, but also has the highest rate of obesity in the general population? Its because the way we look at food is totally wrong, even on most of the "official" levels like the FDA's food pyramid..
So, Eat 3 small meals a day with no snacking in between. Really watch out for sugar, it is the worst thing for you, and MUFAs are the best kind of fat to have in your diet (nuts, seeds, olives, avacados, the good oils, etc...). Drink lots and lots of water and take a pharmaceutical grade mutli-vitamin. I personally aslo take an Omega-3 as I think it helps keep my hair and skin looking exceptionally healthy. Also, weighing your self every day is a good thing. It lets you see right away if your weight is creeping up. Its a habit of most skinny people. |
OP - don't trick yourself just b/c you think you are hard core and going running. That doesn't justify eating more (unless you are a serious athlete, training for a marathon, etc.).
I say that b/c a lot of us fall victim to that trap. The good old "It's just one frappacino and a cookie and I went running this morning so I'll be fine" mentality is flawed. You don't say how long or what your running pace, but most running (on a treadmill) for 30 minutes is only a 200 calorie burn - that's 2 glasses of OJ, one candy bar, a bowl of cereal, or whatever. So, it's very easy to nullify the burned calories. Keep hydrated to feel full and don't eat to satisfy thirst. |
OP maybe you need to have your thyroid checked. Also, if you aren't getting enough sleep you wont lose weight. |
Why is weighing yourself every day a good thing? And most skinny people do it? WTF? Most naturally skinny people I know don't own a scale. |
Whoa. OP, see a nutritionist for REAL info, there is a lot of armchair quarterbacking here, and some of the info is good and some is NOT. Find a good person and get the right info for you!
DCURBANMOMS is not where you should be doing this! |
