First bold: You assume the "naysayers" don't live in this area. We do. We understand it is pricey, but 100-250K around here is MORE than enough. More. Second bold: Yeah. Imagine if that happens to someone making 50,000 or 500,000. The same consequences apply for the most part. You live within your income, you lose one of the incomes, you're gonna suffer. Not really seeing your point here. All is hear i "waaah wahhha mo' money mo'problems." |
Agree. |
| According to whom? |
Seriously. DC is very manageable. |
| For the last time: you need HHI 320K to be ok here. Two 15-10s or bust. No shame in going to flyover country with less and buying a 3500 sq ft sfh on an acre for 360K. |
What a specific standard! What am I going to tell all my friends who don't earn that much, yet manage to live in DC? |
Tell them to piss off. |
+1000 Many people on this forum have lost all touch with reality. |
+100. The difference is that a lot of people who live in LA or Northern NJ or Long Island NY grew up in/near those areas; so their expectations re salary and commutes were set well before their adult years as they saw their parents/neighbors homes and their commutes. So they don't freak out if a commute takes an hr. In DC -- you get a high % of people who are transplants from smaller cities all over the country -- they want a cookie for commuting a hr or having to buy a 500k home bc they are comparing to their families and friends back home who live 5 min from the office in a 250k McMansion. So then we get the -- DC is soooo expensive, you can't possibly understand it -- whining. Many of the people in DCUM would break if they had to deal with buying a home in a suburb of NYC, London, or LA and commuting from there. |
We are by no means struggling and I didn't say we were. I don't feel like we are "making it" because we've just paid off significant debt (cars and over $110k of student loans) and have on,y broken the $200k income the past year. Now we need to build up our emergency fund (currently $20k). We want to make sure we don't fritter away foolishly spent money. |
You are comical. I know people that make a shade over 100K and make it just fine in the DC area. You don't need a 5,000 sq ft house, there are plenty of nice houses 2,500 sq ft or less out there. |
F YES! |
Well according to the inflation calculator, about 182K. |
This is where you are wrong. The consequences are the not the same when the remaining salary is 100K vs 300K. With 100K, you can't afford your kid or a 'shit-sack' in a good school district. At 300K or 500K, you could still do this. |
So, how do you explain all the people with kids who manage tonsurvive around d here on 100k? Oh the horror! They rent or live in a townhomes/condo. |
