Teen coughing violently at night in bed and then vomiting mucus...Please help!

Poor girl! I hope you get it sorted out soon, OP.
My son has an occasional night-time wet cough with phlegm but no vomiting. He has allergies and asthma.

This happened to me EVERY NIGHT for about 3 weeks last summer. I was on vacation with my best friend and her family last summer and my cough really concerned her. They could hear me a floor away.

Her husband is a pulmonary specialist. I had put on some weight and he thought it was silent reflux. My friend kept asking me if I was taking care of my asthma. Typically it only bothers me during allergy season.

She suggested I take one of her son's cingular along with the rest of my allergy protocol. Amazingly it cleared up quite quickly.

So now in the summer I take cingular (about $3 with my insurance), Costco brand claritin (about $30 for 365 tablets) and nascort ($35 for 3 bottles).

While it seems excessive I have a colleague who is using the exact same protocol.

It was an awful time for me. Basically coughing until you throw up. I can't imagine how I would feel if it were my child.

Try to get a prescription for singular. It is better and typically cheaper than flovent. Then get some nasacort and claritin and see whe happens.

It's so fun when someone reveals that they are simultaneously hysterically worried and completely ignorant about something.

Does she have allergies?

Could be GERD, reflux, PND, asthma, sinus infection.

You'll need to see an ENT and/or an allergist.

Sorry for TMI, my GERD looks like mucus vomit, but it's not triggered by laying down.

OP, it could be any of the above that PP's have mentioned. Try the allergy meds and giver her Tums or some kind of OTC anti-acids. '

I, too, used to cough a lot, only at night, laying down, to the point my parents would say the shared wall would vibrate with my coughing. Took me years to find the right doc to tell me it was post nasal drip that was causing my hacking cough. I also have acid reflux and do cough from that too.

I have it it for many years. No one can figure it out. The purple pill - prilosec I think helps some. It usually happens to me after I eat so it may be reflux, maybe a food allergy or who knows. I am fine and actually feel better after I vomit the mucus but its very uncomfortable and messy. Its not triggered by laying down but being more upright helps. An adjustable bed is far better than pillows.

My teen DD had this with a sinus infection. She aspirated some of the phlegm she was constantly gagging on/vomiting and got necrotizing double pneumonia. Six days in hospital on big gun IV antibiotics--this is an infection that has a shockingly high fatality rate. Please see an ENT ASAP.

OP, I do something similar. I saw an ENT and it turns out I have allergies along with a deviated septum. The drainage issues kept causing me to cough up...UGH. Get her to an ENT stat.

There's a virus going around with a really nasty cough. I coughed incredibly violently - more so at night - for 24 days (and counting! I'm still coughing - just not as bad). I threw up several times from mucus. It has been terrible. DH caught it too and has also been coughing like crazy.

Whooping cough. I had it almost 2 years ago. I didn't cough much during the day but I'd always wake up in the middle of the night not able to breath. Then I'd start coughing and couldn't stop. I had tons of clear mucus and it wouldn't stop. I never threw up but my husband caught it from me and he did.

The only things that helped me were advil and a humidifier at night. It gradually got better but it was a couple of months before I wasn't waking up every night.

And, yes, someone can get whooping cough even after being vaccinated. I caught it from my son, who had a much milder case, but he'd been vaccinated just 2 years before.

OP here. Thanks everyone for the advice. Did Flovent + Zantac + bland dinner + raising bed + closing room vents and there was no coughing or vomiting last night. First night since before Labor Day there was no vomiting.

I'm not sure what actually calmed everything down, but I guess I will slowly start backing off of medicines and see when symptoms reappear. We have a f/u with Ped next week, will ask her about getting referral to ENT.

Someone mentioned mold...interesting because I thought about that initially. Had basment flood and wasn't able to get it all cleaned. Don't have $$$$ to get basement waterproofed so mold is possibly growing. I figured I would try to take the carpet up and remove the drywall myself.
DD also has seasonal allergies, but this asthma thing just came out of the blue it seems. Anway, thank you everyone. To the PP that mentioned the cheaper regiment to try, I will ask Ped about that.

sounds like allergy induced asthma. Maybe she is sensitive to something in the environment, like, the possible mold you mentioned. Have her stay at a friend or relative and take her off all the meds and see what happens. I think you might be surprised. I have allergy induced asthma. Anytime I come into contact with things I am allergic to I get a reaction, even when I can't see or smell it. Molds is a big one for me as well as seasonal allergies.

OP here. It's not Bulimia, but I am concerned about some of the the same issue with esophagus and teeth enamal issues with the stomach acids.

I would be too. Have her brush her teeth after each time she pukes.

Bad, bad advice! Tell your daughter NOT to brush her teeth right after vomiting. Instead, she should rinse her mouth very, very carefully and drink a glass of milk, and wait to brush. Brushing your teeth after vomiting actually strips the enamel off of the teeth faster than just the vomiting alone.
