Have you had your tonsils out as an adult? (Tonsilloliths)

I had them out in my early 30s. Recovery wasn't awesome, but I remember being fine after a day or two. Got those disgusting balls too. Strep often as well as other ENT infections. All went away after. Best thing I ever did!!

I had mine out at 23 it was painful for 1-2 days but not too bad. Gallstones are far more painful so is child birth

My sister had them out as an adult.

She said it's much less bad than childbirth, because you can take "the good stuff" for pain meds. She told me the pain lasted about 1-2 weeks and she is SO happy she had it done.

Ditto to what everyone else has said. Got mine out around 21 due to the stones and constant infections. It was a very painful week in bed, and then a very sore throat for a few months. But one of the best things I ever did for my overall health.

OP here. The stones are the only symptom. I can remove some of them, but others get trapped in an area I can't reach or see - I can just sometimes cough them up after gargling. I floss and gargle with salt water 2x/day but these tonsil stones are stubborn as hell. And unspeakably disgusting.

It's especially gross when one pops out while you are talking with someone and you start to gag.

Get your tonsils out. You will have a totally crappy week of recovery -- make sure to get all the good pain meds -- but then no tonsils, no tonsil stones. I had mine out in college and it truly sucked but it was much better than getting strep 4-6 times a year.

I have terrible stones but no infections. I'd be willing to go through the painful recovery, but would I be a candidate to get them out? 40 years old and hate, hate, hate the tonsil stones. I worry about getting older and not being able to flush out my pits anymore and having foul, room-clearing bad breath.

Yes, got it done at 40. I was out of it for almost a week, and took me another week to be fully recovered. I got it out because my kids were catching strep from me all the time.

Both my kids also get tonsil stones. But, we have not got it removed for them, because they are not getting strep anymore.

The best thing ever. I am so healthy now.

I suffer too.
Have you tried rinsing your sinuses daily with a sinus flush/wash?
Eliminating dairy and other foods?
For me, the stones are worse when I am not doing these things.
Also rinsing with a peroxide solution, water and a capful really seems to help.
Then I can put my finger there and smell that it is gone.
Otherwise, ug yes I get daily, yes daily stones....

Got frequent strep and got my tonsils out at age 34. Horrible recovery for me, because the good pain drugs made me nauseous and vomit, which is obviously not good for throat recovery. That said, I was functioning again after two weeks and been so much healthier since then!

I would imagine that a good ENT would work with you on figuring out if you should get your tonsils out or live with them.

Husband got his out at 40s. Recovery was difficult (as much for me as it was for him). He freaked out when they scabbed over and he was spitting up blood. He also got really tired of sweet smooth foods so it was a challenge finding cold things that were smooth yet savory (soft boiled eggs became a favorite).

It was a week of nastiness but things overall are so much better for him without the tonsils.

Worst pain of my life. I was out of work for a week and should have stayed out for two. I watched the clock for my next lortab dose. I lived on freezing cold chocolate ensures for two weeks. I sitting up to sleep. It was hell. However, I do feel much better since I recovered. You will need help.

I would get strep throat 4-5 times a year and it started to be debilitating so I decided to get my tonsils out. I was 30 yrs old and it was the WORST recovery ever...even worse than childbirth for me. I couldn't drink for a week and couldnt eat for 2 weeks...i remember having dreams about eating just one mcdonalds french fry...lol. I had to be readmitted to the hospital for IV hydration and IV pain meds after 3 days, I developed an infection on day 8 and was readmitted again for iv antibiotics and rehydration. It was just awful...that being said, its been 8 years and I have not had a bout with strep throat since I had them removed...I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Good luck!

I had my tonsils out at age 52. I was anticipating a lot of pain so I got my doc to prescribe 2 weeks of morphine. He reused at first then decided to let me have it.

I had very little pain. Get your surgeon to prescribe strong pain meds and you will be fine. All he can do is say "no."
