The Mercedes is the most similar to the old Volvo XC70.

these are so ridiculously out of reach for the normal person.

Isn't there a retro SUV coming out soon? With wood paneling...

The Mercedes is excellent, though way out of our price range.

Perhaps certified pre-owned then? You can pick up a great E wagon certified by a dealer with some warranty left on it for closer to $40k rather than pay $70k for a new E350.

BMW makes an awesome wagon too--especially the diesel. Not sure if they offer a 3rd row. Their certified pre-owned program is outstanding too. I picked up a used CPO BMW for $28k and they gave me two extra years of coverage and free maintenance on top of the normal warranty period.

BMW wagons do not have a third row. But I do second the recommendation of the BMW CPO program. And I love my BMW wagon.

Supposedly the Jeep Wagoneer is being re-introduced in 2018

Also, I believe VW will be rolling off a new all-electric VW MicroBus at CES in spring 2016

+1 My friend has one and has loved it for hauling around her 4 kids both in town and lots of long road trips.

I know a minivan looks nothing like station wagons of 1970s/80s, but they are definitely the equivalent - same buyers market, price point (adj for inflation, of course!), same "vibe." As recently as 10 years ago when we bought a volvo v70 wagon, it came with the option of installing two rear facing seats! Not sure if that has been outlawed

o

I'm on my 2nd Flex. Got my first in 08 when they first came out & just got a new one in July. Great car for hauling my 3 kids. Decent leg room in 3rd row that you can easily access. 1st one had bucket seats in 2nd row but now I have the bench so I can seat 7 for carpooling.

Not my style but there is the option to have wood paneling. I've only seen it once.

Stay away from VW. They are evil and need to get fined big time for what they did with the sneaky emissions thing.
