Basically, every Jewish kid has nice clothes appropriate for temple, ESPECIALLY in the fall, for high holy days. Even if they don't attend temple for the HHDs.

I have an 11 yr old DS. We are jewish. My son, and many other similar aged boys that we saw, wore nice pants and a button down shirt to synagogue for rosh hashana, not a suit. OP, nice pants and a button down are fine - if he has a blazer, wear that, too, but don't buy one for this one occasion.

OP here - thank you!! He doesn't own a blazer so we will do nice pants, button down shirt and tie. We're still going to have to buy some dress shoes...he only has sneakers right now so we'll need them for holiday concerts anyway.

We have purchased expensive suits at Nordstrom for our sons. However, we picked up black suits for the kids at JC Penny last year and they looked fine too with a shirt/tie from another store. Massive savings.

Slacks and a button-down is absolutely fine, preferably with a tie. Blazer is nice but definitely not essential. No need at all to go buy a suit.
