DC rowhouse, new neighbor's dog barking nonstop. Options?

| I called the police (DC) on my neighbors when their dog wouldn't stop barking at 3AM. Because they weren't home, the police told me there was nothing they could do (the officers did come out and look around, but again, no one was there so nothing could be done). They wouldn't even leave a note or warning or anything. |

| Oof. I had this problem for 4 years. I work at home. Neighbor's dog was crated (and not happy about it) all day because otherwise it would destroy their house. So I couldn't just invite the dog over to keep it company or anything. I talked to the owner about it a lot but there never was a solution. I couldn't call animal control on a neighbor I like. Also, if you call animal control they're going to hate you and get all annoyed anytime your kids make noise. |

What would you do? Is there any DC ordinance that applies here? Are we looking at hiring a lawyer to sue them? Wow, 2 weeks in and you are already considering suing? Seriously? |

Someone once called the cops on my dogs (I had accidentally left them outside all day - totally my bad).
All the cops did was make sure I had less than 4 (You can't have more than 4 in the city w/o some special license) and make sure I wasn't beating them - I seriously think the neighbors thought I was abusing the dogs because they barked all day. If the neighbors had bothered to speak to me though, I woudl have told them that it was a complete accident and I never meant to leave them outside to bother people!! |

I have a dog that is prone to barking around strangers. It took him about a month to get used to our new neighbors- he was very attached to our old ones, they used to dog sit him, so it was confusing to have new people on their property. I would imagine a new home is similar
I don't believe Great Danes are yappy breeds, but they are big which could exasperate things. Bark collars do work... I'd talk with your neighbors. They likely don't know the extent of it, and it likely will settle. |
