Depending on the size of the dog, I recommend reading How to Raise a Puppy. (I think it's more effective on larger dogs > 20 lbs or so) We used their methods on our now 13 y.o. lab mix and it yielded excellent results. We also crate trained.
One thing that really curbed mouthing was that we yelped like a puppy when ever he mouthed us. We also played with his food whenever he ate. We can reach in his mouth at anytime and get whatever is in there. It comes in handy. Last thing...feed him after he does his business and chant "go poop" while he is sniffing around (and praise him greatly then feed him) this comes in handy when you need the dog to go in a hurry. I can take my dog out now and say "go poop" few times and am back inside in 2 mins. |

Working with Homeward Trails to match a puppy to our family helped us get a great match for us. I don't think this is proselytizing about rescuing dogs, I think it is helpful to have someone know what you are looking for and be familiar with the puppy as well to choose a puppy whose lifestyle/temperament will mesh with yours.
On training, I think like with children, it depends on your puppy parenting style. Is your puppy/dog going to sleep with you or in a crate? Will you let your dog on the furniture? What is your tolerance for accidents and your home set-up? Then find a trainer who follows a similar philosophy. We have a folding puppy pen that we use to enclose our dog (former puppy) in a small area in our living room with hardwood floors. Its better than having your furniture chewed or using baby gates in our opinion and easy to fold away when you are home. |

OP here. Thanks to those posting this. Happy to get "I wish I had known" stories as well.
And, to the first PP, we ARE adopting a shelter puppy from a breed rescue organization. |

I second the recommendation of Ian Dunbar. I actually took two of his puppy courses in CA. He's great. Tons of free info on his Dog Star daily website, including a pdf of the book mentioned previously.
Good luck and enjoy your puppy! |
