APS where, when, and how do we learn about school lunch?

It sounds like the quality of Arlington school lunches is low?

That is really disappointing.

The quality is fine, as far as I can tell. There are vegetables and fruits, and the bread and pizza are all whole-grain. Milk (including lactaid) is available. My daughter liked most of the lunches, even the fish "treasures." (though she didn't like the chicken & waffles.) They serve pizza every Friday, but the rest of the lunches vary on a 3-week cycle that typically includes one spaghetti day, mac & cheese, a burger, a chicken sandwich, etc.

I think a lot of parents pack lunch to save money or control what their kids eat.

+1 My kids are fairly picky but generally happy with the school lunches. I think it has helped them eat a wider variety of foods. There were changes a few years ago to make them healthier, like switching to whole grain pizza crust. DS doesn't like the new pizza but he likes most of the other options.
