Do the lottery when you get here in January, then get a nanny or day care until August 2016.

Actually if you're starting midyear, just visit the schools you want when you get here. I have heard a lot of stories of midyear moves where schools let new folks in, totally outside the lottery process. It may change this year with more central control through myschooldc, but maybe not!

This is true.

This did happen at our charter. Family with compelling story moved from Africa mid-year. Principal decided to let them in.
