Are there any non-prescription cat foods for diabetic cats?

We love him and want to take good care of him, but some of the expenses are busting our budget -- $300 for insulin and another $50 for syringes! (But obviously they are necessary expenses.) I just purchased the cat food the vet prescribed, which is about $35 for a 6 lb. bag. Is there any cat food on the market that is meant for diabetic cats, is non-prescription, and is maybe not quite so pricey?

I know you said $35 for 6 lbs. but could it be $55 for 15 pounds? As in spending less overall by buying it in a bigger bag? (After you know she likes it)

We love hills in our house.

Not a long-term solution, but there is a coupon for $5 off a bag of the prescription diet. I feel for you. My 12yr old cat needs prescription food as well, my vet takes the coupons. I have not been able to find anywhere to order it that is less expensive that my vet's office.

Can you feed them the raw meat diet? They sell frozen meat you just defrost and serve up.
