| I used to nanny in that area and found many of the moms I came into contact with snobby. Once they found out I was a nanny or found out where I lived (along Rt. 1), they no longer wanted to talk to me. The houses seemed overpriced to me since many of them were in need of lots of updating. |
| There is also a lot of snobbery around if you live in "Waynewood proper" or just in the school district. Like you are a second class citizen if you don't go to their pool and are not in the Waynewood neighborhood boundaries. I have heard many moms say Waynewood Elementary is "like a private school". As a private school mom I can tell you it's not. That is just their code for "white, upper middle class." The moms at our private school are much more down to earth than the Waynewood moms I know. |
| Do most Waynewood kids go to Sandburg and West Potomac after elementary school? Seems like it must be a huge shock to go from all white and fairly wealthy to the mixed bag of race and economic status that the middle school and high school draw. |
| Most kids do go to Sandburg and WP. It's a HUGE shock. Most parents try to have their kids placed in honors/AP classes to limit exposure to the Highway kids. |

OMG, you are all being ridiculous. If you like the houses, like the location, you will be fine! We are a white family in WW, but my kids have more friends from sports and other activities than from the school itself and many of them are not white. There are snotty parents at all of the schools (we have a kid at stratford landing also and there are cliquish parents there too). You will find the parents and neighbors that you click with and you'll be all set. For those your don't, so what?
OP - do you work or SAH? That might make a difference. I work f/t so I'm not around the hood during the day and we don't belong to the pool, so my exposure to the parents are through clubs and aftercare and not hanging out in the neighborhood. If you bike or run, the trail is easy to access and the neighborhood is actually a good place to run as well. The school is a really great school with good teachers and a solid principal. |
pp here again - for the pp who said that she gleaned that information from "looking at houses in the neighborhood" I'd like to know how? And to the poster who said the kids are SHOCKED when they go to Sandburg, again I say PU-LEASE...Unless their kid hasn't played any sports or participated in any local activity or club, they will be exposed to plenty of diversity. OP - keep looking to you find a place that suits you. |

My daughter goes to Belle View and she has plenty of kids from Waynewood. I have a lot of friends whose children go to WW. Race is an issue if you want to make it an issue. Of course, there are racists everywhere, but no more in Waynewood (just because it is mostly white); I think you'll be fine.
BTW, I'm not white. |
I meant she has plenty of friends from Waynewood. |
| OP, did you make a decision? |
