OP here- the cabinets are good quality, solid oak, custom cabinets so it is hard to think about throwing them away. We plan on being in this house for the next twenty years. We were thinking in 7 to 10 years we could do a major kitchen remodel but bu then our oldest will be going to college and we probably won't be able to afford it them either. Thanks for the poster who posted the garden web info. I am going over there to check it out. |
You could also look into refacing the cabinets - you'd still be throwing away good quality doors, but at least you'd keep the boxes, shelves, drawer hardware, etc. You'd save a lot on the labor as well as not having to buy as much new material. |
Please save up and replace both. New cabinets are a game changer. I hate when people put new counters on icky cabinets. We passed on many houses because of this. It would have seemed wasteful to throw out their granite/quartz just because they hadn't redone the cabinets too. (we ended up with a house with icky formica plus old cabinets and redid it all).
But if you must- gel stain it. |
After reading the responses and thinking it over DH and I are thinking it would be better to wait. We are going to try and remove the old counter tile (that has some ugly flower design, missing grout and cracks), and retile the counter and redo the backsplash, replace the sink and the hardware. DH estimates it shouldn't cost us over 400 to 500 dollars. If we mess up it couldn't be worse than it is now. Then in three to four years we will get new cabinets and counter. |
