OP here. I meant thanks to the PP and the other posters for all your posts. |
Honestly, the best high schools in Fairfax County are Langley, McLean, Oakton, James Madison and Woodson--probably in that order.
Now, we can't count TJ, really, due it not being an open enrollment school. I'd be very happy for my kids to go to any of the above schools, but honestly... all Fairfax County schools are pretty phenomenal... |
There's more to these schools than their mean SAT scores. For example, Madison is reportedly a good fit for very athletic kids. McLean and Woodson have mostly middle to upper middle class kids and many highly motivated students. Langley has the most wealthy students, and the fewest students on free lunch. Oakton is sort of a mix of all the others, in addition to having some of the strangest boundaries in FCPS.
If you're looking for more specific information on Oakton HS, check its web site and its FCPS profile, on the FCPS web site. |
I also graduated from Oakton many years ago (class of 95!) Looking back on it now, it was a pretty good school. I had a mix of good and bad teachers. There were some drugs at school, and probably gangs but I don't remember them causing any problems. Oakton had (and I'm sure still does) a very low tolerance for drugs and violence. And, I believe they got rid of the really bad teachers fairly quickly in most cases. |
I am glad that you had a good experience, and hopefully this is still the norm for Oakton High School, but a LOT can change in 14 years. I truly hope that nobody is judging the current quality of a school based on such dated information. |
Whatever "current" information people could provide now will be outdated by the time OPs kids go to OHS anyway, so what is your point?? DUH. |
