What's a good sport for short kids?

A woman in my dorm was quite petite and played on the rugby team. There are some positions where small and quick is a real advantage.

Ultimate Frisbee. Short players who are quick and good with the disc can do very well.

How old is your daughter? What does she like?
Team sport or individual sport?
My co-worker's daughter just quit soccer the end of Jr. and now is doing club basketball and loves it. She's only 5foot.

I knew someone who played on their h.s. basketball team with one arm. The other was amputated at the elbow. I doubt her parents were sitting around thinking, "What can a one-armed kid play?"

Let your DD pick the sport she likes.

Equestrian sports, such as dressage or show jumping. You could sign her up for riding lessons if she likes horses.

Figure skating looks like a lot of fun. Depending on her body proportions, maybe ballet or gymnastics.

Swimming worked well for me.

Would I have been better had I been four or five inches taller? Sure. But I still did very, very well from ages 7-18.

And most importantly, I had a GREAT time competing on various teams while also making new friends, learning to focus my mind during practices, be a good teammate, balance my sport with other priorities etc.

To this day, I still love to swim, for fun and exercise, and I draw on my years of practice and discipline in every athletic thing I do. Doesn't matter that I was always the shortest one on the blocks.

Let your DD pick her own sports. Her interest and enthusiasm will have a far greater impact on her success than her size.

I hear field hockey is good for short girls- since you spend so much time hunched over anyway.

Sign up for voice lessons if you can! A good voice coach can make almost anyone a decent singer.

A few suggestions:

sports where short girls can compensate for their height disadvantage with speed and agility: tennis, soccer (think Megan Klingenerg), basketball (point guard)

sports where short girls have an advantage: gymnastics, diving, cross-country

sports where you have to be short: crew -- coxswain!!

+1

I wouldn’t really worry about height in any way until she is around 12/13 in the sense that if she was quite short and loved basketball and soccer, I might gently steer toward soccer. I say this because I have a short 12yo DS who loves basketball and baseball..we are willing to pay for travel baseball but have steered him toward rec basketball for now. He is not going to be tall. If he really wants to play travel basketball in a year, we will revisit.

I was a coxswain through high school and college. It's awesome, but pretty tough to actually spend a lot of time getting physically fit doing it.

My son is quite short (15th percentile), and soccer and futsal have worked well for him.
