Another option, DE clinics will cover their a ss es by getting better legal help on all docs, rewrite the paper work for Egg donors and da ta! price will go a bit up to cover those changes, so no panic, let's have hope

| No one HAS to have eggs from an I've league female. In fact, these days you are much more likely to get eggs from women that need 5K. I knew someone that donated 3 times to get a down payment. To say she wasn't the sharpest took in the shed in an understatement. If the restrictions are lifted the quality of egg donors as well as diversity will likely go up. However money talks, so it would benefit people willing to spend more as does everything in the free market. |
| The thing is the market for very expensive (and presumably higher quality) eggs would be limited. Most people undergoing IVF treatments are stretching financially for multiple cycles and meds. Paying 20K just for the eggs may be out of reach. Those who can afford it may have additional requirements - like genetic tests (think Counsyl) for a potential donor. Sure, you're smart, blond and sporty, but what if you're say a carrier for Tay Sachs? then your eggs are worth nothing. Or perhaps the donees who are shelling out 50K for your eggs will want to get access to your family's health records? That sister of your grandma's in the mental institution? Yep, no dice, your eggs are not desirable. Etc, etc. These are just scenarios. The good thing is, nobody says you're limited to just the US when it comes to IF treatments. There are cheaper options, including donor eggs elsewhere. |

My husband and I are "intended parents" who can only start our family using egg donation and surrogacy. The cost of an egg is a complicated issue but here is a look into our experience thus far and why we think the $10,000 cap is fair:

| $5k is not even close to fair. Risks are too high. When I was a HYP undergrad I know a woman who sold her eggs for close to $100k. |
The blonde hair is actually problematic. |
| I find the infertility entitlement just plain nuts. Nobody has any obligation to keep DE prices low just so that poorer couples have this option open to them. |
I disagree. The risks are low and it's a minor inconvenience. Also, more data points to environment - not genetics - in children. |
| I predict that this lawsuit will mainly benefit the lawyers and that the end result will be that DE will be illegal in some states. |
| While environment does play a factor let us not kid ourselves about genetics. They have done twin studies and found that identical twins raised apart have more in common with each other than their same household "siblings". |
Nope. PP knows the market rate (desire) for her eggs is basically top-shelf. It is what it is. |
This. It's some major cognitive dissonance. Society should tilt towards those donating. If they know the value of their eggs, the compensation should match to perceived worth. Until we reach the point where ALL eggs are valued equally, the compensation should naturally differ. I don't expect to pay the same for a necklace at Macy's if I'm shopping at Tiffany's. As a black woman with somewhat mixed-valued eggs (light skin, "good" hair, educated, but with weight issues to balance it out) even I can't ignore the market value of the athletic, white, educated materials. Come on! I'd be a great match to any inter-racial couple, but I do carry genes that aren't desirable as well. A friend was "shopping" for a match to meet her background. She couldn't find anyone, although I believe she settled on a Persian donor. She is a single mother by choice, and would have happily incentivized a donation by a male donor to meet her needs. |
| Agree that society should tilt towards those donating, who tend to be poorer and in worse positions financially than those seeking DE. We should not be prioritizing middle class DE seekers over women who truly could use a leg up in life. It seems so unfair to short change those women for the benefit of some middle class couple having an egg. Sorry, life isn't fair and we can't all have kids. |
Clearly you are not going through IVF and have found out your only hope of a child is through DE. This is such an insensitive statement. |
Some people are just not destined to be parents. It is a huge tragedy I agree but life doesn't always work out. |
