OP - I'm not knocking you for reconsidering buying the house based on this guy, but did want to point out that the possiblility that you could find another great house in a similar neighborhood where there are no registered offenders, and then three days, three weeks, or months after you move in, a registered offender could move into the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, we can only control so much (and I'm not saying that snarkily or sarcastically, honestly, since having kids I wish there were a lot more I could control...)

"I'm starting to feel reassured that this is a creepy dude that probably molested his neice or nephew or something. Not that this makes his CRIME any better, but it doesn't seem AS likely that they'd be able to victimize my kid. "

Are you kidding? What do you know about sex offenders?

Trust me, I know. I actually said that in my intial post (or meant to, if I didn't). Of course I realize that I could find a place without an offender and then one could move in -- and also, as someone else pointed out, there could be someone right next door who just hasn't been caught. Still, I have the choice to move or not to move to a house that definitely DOES have a sex offender who currenty lives one block away. It's one thing to say that you can't know everything, it's another thing to NOT worry about the thing that you definitely DO know.

Still, I haven't made up my mind yet. I think others are probably right that the biggest thing to do is just educate the kids, especially as they become more independent.

Why would you take the time to write such a stupid response? It should be obvious from my question that I am not trying to pretend I know anything about sex offenders. But do you know what else is obvious? You're a useless bitch.

"one could move in next door to us even if we did find a place with no offenders there currently. "

This exact thing happened to me. I feel sick even living next to him but all I could do was put up a huge fence and cut off all contact, even pleasantries with his wife and children.
