Do you think Obama will spare Austin in the Jade Helm invasion?

You need to worry that your son will never want to come back to the East Coast. Life is pretty sweet in Austin.

Once she gets in then you can spend the effort evaluating it.

The school is very big. DD had friends who attended. They did fine but did note that first two years it was nothing to have classes with 200-300 students. Most never met their professor. If you can deal with that try it. But, those on this thread say its really tough to get into? That's really not the case. know many 3.5s who have been accepted but went elsewhere.

I'm a UT Austin grad and so is DH. I certainly had some large general ed type classes my freshman year, but for a self directed student there are so many opportunities. I was in two honors programs and I studied abroad. My upper division classes in my major all had 15 or fewer students. My DH ended up at Georgetown Law. I am not set on my kids going there, but I feel strongly that I made the most of my time there. There are many excellent departments: film, business, Latin American studies, engineering. . .

I graduated from there almost 10 years ago. Your general studies classes are in huge lecture halls and it's standard for the tests to be by scantron, which is obviously easier than essay style. Because of that, I don't really recall much from those classes. I actually was a transfer in so I was a little behind on my coursework because some stuff didn't carry over... I took a few classes over the summer at Austin CC in subjects I didn't give a flip about because they were cheaper, easier, and didn't impact my UT GPA. Classes got much smaller and more hands on once I reached my major. It's very diverse and there is literally something for everyone.

The only correct reply about the difficulty of admission on this thread was the first one

Wrong. Demand for admission from within the State of Texas is so high that the number of out of state students they can admit is severely limited. They can do this because they don't need the money. UT's endowment is second only to Harvard. This article linked below about state schools taking increasing numbers of out of state students for their $$ shows UT near the bottom with only 5% out of state. The latest stat I can find says that 32% of out of state applicants were accepted, but I've heard that those numbers have gone down recently. I couldn't find the number for Michigan, which is interesting, because they're at 40% out of state, and have been as high as 50% recently. If those who are saying it is easy to get into are going on information that is more than a few years old, it's way out of date. As noted by others, the new system that guarantees admission to the top % of every high school class in Texas has greatly reduced the number of other students they can take, even from in state.

All this said, I would go to a smaller university for undergrad and go to UT for graduate school. And I would worry about your kid not wanting to come back east.
