I would stick with eye-nez.

ee-nes sounds like you are trying too hard. Keep it simple.

ee-nes is the way i would naturally pronounce it, though, because that's the way i've always heard it pronounced except for 1 person (a very old redneck relative of mine) who pronounces it eye-nez. i'm not 'trying' to do anything but i do think it sounds prettier (and less country) pronounced ee-nes

Well most people on here think Eye-Nez is better. You asked....so are you still spelling it Inez? You know your kid will be correcting people her whole life. Why would you want that? Whatevs you are trying too hard.

yes, but before i asked this question i didn't know that most people thought it was pronounced eye-nez because, like I said, I've only heard it pronounced that way by one person who I don't consider an authority on the name. and I maintain i'm not "trying too hard" because the only reason I'd choose that pronunciation (if we choose this name at all, which we might not!) is because I think it sounds better, not because I'm trying to be something I'm not or trying to sound cool or whatever is implied by me 'trying too hard.' but no, i dont want my kid correcting people her whole life...so maybe we'll go w/ another name. maybe we'll spell it Ines.

Then it will be pronounced Eye-Ness. If you want it pronounced your way it would be Enes...she will still be correcting.

you are probably right about that. but this has been and still is one of the most common names in France and in Spain and is usually spelled Ines and pronounced ee-nes in those countries. unfortunately, in the U.S., I don't think people know this and she will always be correcting people, which would be very annoying.

I love Inez!

It's true in France this is often pronounced Een-es, like the famous model Ines de la Fressange.

It is a derivative of Agnes, which in France is pronounces Ahn-yes.

Love it! Would pronounce it ee-nez. Reminds me of inez milholland, the suffragist.

I had two girls in my elementary school named Inez, not pronounced Eye-nezz, but Eh-ness (more or less). I don't care for the Eye-nezz pronounciation, FWIW.

In the DC metro area (inner burbs and city, at least) I would think most people will be aware that it's ee-nes. I have never heard it pronounced "eye-nes". The PP insisting on that pronunciation must be older and/or live in the boonies.

I don't think she'll be "constantly" correcting people. Maybe up to 50% of first-time introductions she'll have to correct, but then only the assholes will keep mispronouncing. It's not like the way you want to say it is hard, and I think it actually is the more common pronunciation.

Ha wow you are a psychic aren't you? I grew up and currently live inside the beltway and I am probably younger than you. I can guarantee you most people will say EYE-NEZ. We are not living in Europe, this is the US.

There were several pps who said Ay-nez. I'm not from the boonies, but that is how all of the (admittedly older) women I know pronounce it.

Ines is pronounced E-nes. Would never pronounce it Eye-nes, and it's a beautiful name.

In both spinach and french it is spelled INES and pronounced EENES, accent on the Nes
No hispanic person is going to pronounce it EYEnes unless you spell it Aynes or Aines. Spanish is a completely phonologic language.
