In "tribal" societies, don't parents send boys of about this age off to live in separate dwellings for a couple years? Only coming back when they are ready to be adults in the community? Seems to make a lot of sense to me.

If I could do this and trust that my 8 yo were being supervised (special needs) and was having a blast of a time, I'd enjoy every moment of the break. You don't miss because you know how good the break is for you both.
