| When my husky was under 5 walks werent enough. He escaped from the backyard and ran for hours sometimes getting into mischief but he was always happy to run off that energy. Very high energetic breed sigh I miss him so much |

3 year old beagle.
3 walks a day ( 1 45 minutes, 1 20 minutes, 1 variable 10-45) Doggie door to fenced backyard. Very high energy dog -- up to two years of age got 5 walks a day. |
|
Usually daily. If we miss a day we do our 3 mile route through Rock Creek. Also go to dog park one time on weekends where she gets running in.
3 year old lab mutt. |
|
Three times a day, about 6-7 miles altogether. Six-ish year old big mutt.
The dog would be happy with less walking; this is how I get my exercise and he's stuck coming along. |
|
8 yr old Pomeranian
2 five-10 minute walks, 3 mini outings daily. Not having a yard has helped us walk more. |
|
18 month old Portuguese Water Dog
We have very small backyard that is big enough for him to do his business, but not really DH walks him around the block in the morning, dog walker takes him to the dog park to run off leash once during the day, ideally another trip to the dog park in the evening and around the block before bed, if no evening trip to the dog park he gets another walk around the block or longer. You can really tell by the dog's evening behaviour if he doesn't get enough exercise during the day, so we make an effort to make sure he gets out a lot during the day. |
She does her kegels.

| Boxer and Boston terrier. We don't walk them often- they use our big backyard to run around and go to the bathroom. |
I don't think it's sad. It depends on the dog and how it lives. Our dog lived on a farm and just followed me around all day, I didn't need to take him for formal "walks." I think he had a much more normal dog life than most dogs who are shut up in a house all day and are taken for brief, slow walks on a rope for 30 minutes a day. |
| Another dachshund owner here. Probably 5-10 times a day. Walks range from around the block to 1 mile. 4 years old. |
|
2 30-45 min walks
Several other little 5 min potty break Shi-poo |
Yes, but don't be dense. I doubt that poster was talking about farm dogs. All able dogs should get a walk every day, if not for the exercise, for the mental stimulation. Dogs derive great pleasure and satisfaction from sniffing and exploring--it is just as much a mental thing as it is a physical thing. And Cesar, who says walks are just for doing business, can suck it. For dogs, sniffing new scents and exploring new scenery is key to their mental well being. So they need walks to be able to experience that. |

Once a day, typically. We walk about 2 miles or go for a hike.
Sometimes we take a day off, especially if the weather is lousy or I'm sick. The benefits of having a fenced yard - she still needs the walk but we don't have to everyday. Before with no yard she had to be walked a few times a day no matter what! Dog is a rescue and we think she's a Carolina Dog mix. She's about 40lbs. |

Disclaimer: I know that the following constitutes crazy cat lady behavior.
I pay the neighbor's child to walk my cat for 30 minutes a day. The cat had some behavior issues that have disappeared since she started her daily walks. Plus, I'm a crazy cat lady. If I had a dog, I would ensure it had daily walks as well. Mammals need to feel the sun and wind on them every day. |
