Do some research on the concrete base question, there is a lot of misinformation on this board.

With a paver patio, for example, you do not want a concrete slab underneath; a compacted stone/gravel base allows for proper drainage, otherwise you will be dealing with deterioration from freezing and thawing over time with water that cannot escape.

The concrete slab method is more expensive for you and quicker for the contractor than taking the time to lay the proper compacted foundation for a patio.
