+1. There are plenty of September kids "on time" in my kid's school. They're fine.

Anyway, OP, you missed the window to send your kid early. The last 2 schools in DC with late deadlines moved them up this year. Unless your kid has special needs that early intervention has determined could be serviced in a school setting, you're not going to get a spot.

Another October parent here -- love that DC is one of the oldest in the class. And watching the development of the kids in the class above over the years ... so correct to keep my kid on time instead of pushing ahead, though we were tempted.

Think long term, particularly middle school (6th & 7th specifically), dating/driving age, and sending her off to college. It is not just about preK-early elementary.

Some of the kids start to mature very quickly around 5th and 6th grade, particularly if the class is older. Speaking from experience. It can be very difficult for the kid who is still emotionally and physically a kid when all her friends suddenly start acting like teens.

That's because you can't red shirt for Pk. Wait till k when all the 6.5 year olds show up.

You can redshirt for PK. What you can't do is move your kid up.
All you have to do to redshirt in PK is to say you want your kid to lottery into a school a year behind. So if my kid is eligible for PK4, I can just say I am lotterying for PK3.

Buy your kid will be Kindergarten age the following year and that's where DCPS will place her.

Nope. I sepcifically asked about this and was told you can lottery in for a you get grade and then have the right to move up that track.

Bethune might move their cutoff to december.

I wish the whole country would stick to one cut off birthday. My nephew is 1 month younger than my daughter and will be a grade ahead of her because he lives in another state where the cut off is Dec 31st.

You can redshirt for PK.
It happens in our DCPS all the time.

When "late" becomes the norm you kinda have to go with the social flow of the school. I didn't realize how "young" she would of been if I sent her on time. Out of 27 kids, 10 of them would of been at least a year older then her! I moved from a location where people sent their kids on time but here they don't making it almost a disadvantage if you do. Its counter intuitive but just the way it is in this area.

And you don't live in DC do you? You must be talking about VA or MD.

Because people in VA and MD don't know better than to say "would of"?

Exactly. I know at our JKLM there are no redshirted kids in PK- because they will be place in K. People who want to redshirt stay at private PK for an extra year and then enter at K.

Our JKLM principal allows parents to redshirt for PK and many do (including myself).
It really depends on the school!!
