How to truly darken a room?

What we did was white poster board facing the outside (for looks), and aluminum foil on the inside. That will fix it!

Also, OP, don't forget to cover the smoke detector light with black electrical tape. Especially if the light is green or blue, that tiny dot is very very bright in the dark, after your eyes adjust. Studies say that even that much blue or green light can upset melatonin release.

did you install the curtains about a foot above the window?

We have both blackout curtains AND blackout honeycomb shades in our room and our daughter's room. Both rooms face south, so they're naturally fairly bright, but the double layer of blackout "protection" makes them pretty dark. It's important to hang blackout curtains high and wide for maximum light blocking. You may want to remount your curtain rod.
