...because it's still possible to get into good charters that are not far away. As that changes / if it does, we may see some change.
Also.note that the principal switch at Burroughs seemed to touch off increased interest in that school. |
| Yes, IB program requires parental participation and support. One community goals is create an IB program for Bunker Hill. Stay tuned! |
| I'm an inbound parent whose kids don't go there. Let me know when the revitalization of the school has taken place and we'll re-evaluate. I'm sure that only a few inbound families have their kids there. Most of us have kids at the many charters that abound in/around Brookland. |
| I'm also still hopeful that Brookland MS will encourage people to take a second look at Bunker Hill. We'll just have to wait and see. |
| Several years ago teaching at Bunker Hill led my friend to quit the teaching field for a year. They ended going back into the field at a charter school. The administrators at BH were not good then. Test scores 2014 year were 34 adv/prof math, 38 adv/prof reading i.e. abysmal. |
| Looks like a central office staffer or DCPS booster has posted several times to this thread. If you talk to anyone, anyone, who has young children who has recently moved to Brookland, they aren't considering Bunker Hill. Give it a good principal and they might want to tour. But just saying a feeder school is going to get better because of a Middle School that hasn't even opened its doors? Hard to get behind that. |
| No, not a central administration staffer. I am Just a committed parent who supports believes in strong neighborhood schools. Too often in this city, people believe that the grass is always greener some place else. As a parent, I see the potential that the school has to do great things. Remember, strong test scores in this city is more has been more of a reflection of the income level of parents thing anything else. |
Do your kids even attend the school? |
| Yes, the two of them currently attend. |
Are you happy with the school? What grades are the kids in? What do you like/ dislike/ want to see improved? Are you on the Brookland_Kids list and willing to share there? |
| My kids are in the Kindergarten and 2nd grade. No, I am not on the Brookland list. |
Because you live in Maryland? |
No, that would mean her kids went to Bethune. |
| NP to this thread. It would be great if you reached out to the Brookland kids listserv. You can find it in yahoo groups. I am one of many parents in bound for bunker hill with a toddler. I haven't been able to meet any bunker hill parents through the neighborhood, but would love to do so and to learn more about the school, whether to have my child attend or volunteer. |
+1. I have been on the BKids listserv for 6 years, and recall many parents asking about Bunker Hill, including my husband. He never received a response from any other parents in the neighborhood. The Burroughs principal, on the other hand, has hosted living room chats with local families to promote the school. |
