Silent lunches - are they a real thing?

Honestly, my parents use to have "silent dinner" for the first 10 min of dinnertime, to make sure we ate. Otherwise My siblings and i would have never stopped talking. After 10 min, we talked about the day. It was fine.

It is hard to describe just how noisy some of those cafeterias can be.

My son has assigned seats in his 1st grade lunch. He is a loud child and not particularly noise sensitive, but has asked many times if he could eat lunch in the classroom or somewhere else because the noise bothers him so much during lunch. The teacher let him a couple times and he loves it but she needs a break too. He's in FCPS and would love if part of lunch could be silent. He loves socializing but says the noise hurts his head so bad he can't eat.

Was at a function in a hotel a few weeks ago. Cocktail hour in the foyer.......the noise was incredible. NO music--just too many people talking. I had to go into another room. It literally hurt.

Yes. First ten minutes is silent for all. They can also earn silent lunch for just about any discipline problem, not just lunchroom issues. Not a fan of it as punishment.

Our cafeteria gets super loud. Too many kids with no volume control.
