[ Every parent I know who has decided to send their child to a different middle school, past and currently, has continued or will continue with Mandarin education for their children. What makes you think we would not for our children? Before DCI, which is only in its first year of operation, we had continuation plans beyond Yu Ying. |
| Just looked at DCI website. It didn't mention kids have option to do algebra in 8th grade, but maybe I missed it. Does anybody know? This would be a major concern for me. I didn't have the option of taking Algebra in 8th and it put me at a major disadvantage in high school and college. |
| The standard for conpetitive college admissions is now 7th grade PP, just FYI. |
Stop. 8th grade is fine as well. |
| Thanks. So I assume DCI will offer algebra in 8th grade with an option for taking it in 7th? |
Maybe in the future, but not now. The school is still growing. |
Of course it is fine, but if the other poster was lamenting access to algebra in 8th grudge 20 years ago, the equivalent of that now is in 7th grade. you can prioritize learning a language over that of course, which is likely what many families at DCI do. |
The standard hasn't moved to 7th grade just because it's "20 years" later. Please cite your sources that 7th grade algebra is the standard to be competitive for kids who are not focused on STEM majors. |

When I went to an info session on DCI, there were kids who were going there who were speaking. Some 6th graders were doing 7th grade math, some 7th graders were doing 8th grade math. I don't think Algebra was mentioned but I could be wrong - but definitely differentiation, and I don't think they have 8th grade this year, do they?
We are at a feeder in a younger grade. |
The standard was algebra in 7th grade, ~40 yrs ago when I was in middle school for elite colleges. |
| I went to an elite college 25 years ago and this was not the case. 8th grade, yes. |
Depends where you are from. If you applied from flyover country, you could get into an elite college without algebra in 7th. If you are from a major east coast metro area, good luck getting into an elite college without algebra in 7th. |
This is the standard for upper middle class whites and Asians so YMMV. |
| So, you're saying that no white or Asian kids will get into an elite college from DCI if they don't offer algebra in 7th grade? Wow. |
Not saying anything about where the kids from DCI will go to college. Would be very premature, no? Just saying what HYP etc. expect from applicants to have a smidgen chance of getting in. |
