gift card for 8 year old boy?

Personally I don't like giving gift cards but my 9 year old son and my nephew LOVE them. Target Lego store or Barnes and Noble are big hits.

My son received his 1st gift card for his 7th birthday to for Barnes and Noble. I think it was his all time favorite gift. He was thrilled to pick something out for himself. (and much better for him than checks or even cash from relatives which usually ends up in Moms and Dads hands for "safe keeping.")

The only gift cards I'm willing to do are Barnes & Noble.

I don't like giving gift cards to children because it doesn't require any thought. But, I have done it in a pinch. My nephew is incredibly spoiled and trying to find something he doesn't have is next to impossible.

And where to?

I find buying for boys this age really hard. They're "over" Legos. They have all the sports gear they need.
Who knows what video games they have or want.

Is a gift card really lame?
Where to?

They are? Not among the 8 year old boys I know.

I thought an 8 year old boy would be over legos by 8, but my 12 year old nephew is obsessed. But, his mother is too and that is the reason. Very weird, IMHO, but they like it. They even go to those conventions where people show what they have built. A few steps away from a Star Trek Convention, I fear.

Jesus, you sound toxic.

I give gift cards at this age all the time. Kids love to shop on their own and can combine GCs with cash or other GCs to get something really special. I usually give Target or TRU cards.
