Mad Men: Betty *spoiler alert!*

Remember when one of Sally's roommates lost her mother? The girls went shopping instead of going to the funeral. They were too young to feel any empathy for their classmate's loss. Now Sally has the same happen to her.

And truly, we are all Sallies because of when we were born but we could just as easily have been Betties and I think we all see ourselves in her.

However, I don't think this is a horrible ending for her. As Sally said, she kind of loves the tragedy of it. She will never get old, she will be beautiful forever. She finally has the gift of being able to see the good parts of Sally's nature; she isn't a child who is intent on rebelling and embarrassing Betty, but a strong girl who can get herself and her brothers through this. Betty knows she will be okay and can finally appreciate Sally for that strength and will and hardheadedness that always vexed her. I am sad to think of a future with no Betty Francis in it but I think the ending giving to Megan is much sadder. What did she get? A bunch of lost dreams and hush money to go away. Betty got everything she ever wanted- she even said "I have everything and nobody could want anything better."

great comments, I agree completely. I thought the letter was pitch perfect in terms of staying true to Betty's character. Betty has taken a lot of heat during this show and I love that she is being redeemed, both through the storyline of her going back to school and now this. I keep thinking about how this will irreparably change Bobby and Gene (and Sally, of course, but to a lesser extent since she is older.) And then I remind myself that these are fictional characters. Can't wait till Sunday!

they may be fictional but i boo-hoo cried when that letter was read. it was quite a way to end mother's day. jeesh! and then i had the nerve to listen to 2 podcast recaps. i won't need to see this episode ever again.

+1 cannot wait till sunday's episode.

I thought the conversation Betty had with Sally on the bed was one if the most well-acted and well-written scenes of the entire series.

It made me totally change my mind about Birdie!

She was always my favorite character. I'm glad she got more of a story this season. I cried at that episode. Am very sad to say goodbye to these characters who I've gotten to know over the last 8 years.

I'll never forgive Betty for the way she fired Carla. That was stone cold.

I loved this episode but it was tough for me to watch. I'm about four years younger than the Sally character and lost my mother to cancer around the same age that Sally was. In some ways my mother was like the Betty character, and my relationship with her was turbulent right up to the end of her life. I was left behind to care for my two younger siblings, so that scene with Sally at the kitchen table with Bobby and Gene really got to me. Damn! I wasn't expecting Betty to die.

Here's the text of that paragraph:

“Sally, I always worried about you because you marched to the beat of your own drum, but now I know that’s good. I know your life will be an adventure. I love you, Ma.”

This was a huge statement! Loved it!

Can you remind me what happened? I've forgotten so much about this show. Need to watch them all again.

Carla let Glen Bishop into the house to talk to Sally.

She kissed Henry but he refused to do anything with her until the divorce was final. She did sleep with Don again. I forgot about that.

What was her line? She didn't want some sordid affair or scandal.
