DS left garden hose on for 36 hours, how much water bill are we looking at?

I think your DH or you needs to take responsibility and realize it was your job to check that everything was turned off and put away properly. At about 8/9 kids can be trusted with that, but 6? They can still have huge lapses in judgment and should be double-checked when they are in charge. That's like leaving open paint cans around a 3-year-old: not his fault, yours!

Lesson learned. Do not give a responsibility like this to a 6 year old. If it can cost you big bucks or cause big problems - that job belongs to an adult or should at least be supervised by an adult.

OP here. Thanks, all. This is in Fairfax county. I told DH that I will pay the water bill this month. I was with DS and his toddler brother. DS wanted to water the plants, but his brother was climbing the stairs to go back into the house. I asked DS whether he turned off the water, and he said yes. I didn't check because I was helping younger DS with the stairs, so my fault. DH is still very angry ...

We are in DC and had a toilet run for 10 days while we were away. Used roughly 60,000 gallons of water and the bill was $876. ::cries::

Water in Fairfax County is significantly cheaper than elsewhere in this area. I'd imagine you are looking at around $300 or less.

It's not that big of deal for a 6yo to forget to turn the water off. DH needs to chill.

Test your hose by timing how long it takes to fill a 5 gallon bucket and adjust accordingly. And check your water bill for the rates.

And is your yard or neighbor's yard flooded? That's a lot of water.

10 gal/min? I bet it's close to 5 gal/min than 10... Don't they also charge sewage fees also?

Did you not have a spray attachment on the garden hose.

For reference, I used an extra 6k gallons of water last quarter cause we didn't notice our powder room toilet water was running continuously.
it was like an extra $100, I was pissed at myself cause I didn't notice until after I saw the bill, it was barely audible.

OK, this is what stands out to me: YOU will pay for the water this month? You and DH, with whom you share two kids, don't share finances?

Don't go there, PP. I don't get it either, but some couples roll that way.

And sh*t happens. If you had gotten busy with the hose something could have happened to your toddler. Stuff happens for a reason. Unless you are a routinely careless person (in which case you all have bigger concerns), your dh just needs to suck this one up.

I saw that comment too and wondered SHE will pay for the water? Weird.

Yes, this is the bigger issue here.

Side note- why don't they bill for water monthly??? I hear so many stories about people who didn't realize that a toilet was running or even a hose outside was on for months. I dislike quarterly billing.
