| Patrick Dempsey's barely been on this season anyway, so I assume he wanted off the show but stuck around to do a few episodes this season. |
Agree, full circle. |
| I doubt Christina will come back, but in real life if your best friend's husband died unexpectedly you would come back and help of you could. |
|
Yeah, I was wondering what kind of excuse they'll come up with for why Christina won't come to help Meredith.
Also, I thought it was a little weird that she took him off life support without calling his sister first. They couldn't have been that far outside Seattle if the accident happened on his way to the airport. As someone who once waited many hours for a specialist who was supposed to be "on call" to show up at the hospital, while I had a major life-threatening injury, I was both really irritated by, and perversely pleased by, the stupid "doctor is at dinner" story line. (My doctor also did the "Call him again and find out where the hell he is" a couple of times....) I do sort of hate it when shows are really terrible to their characters, for no real reason at all. If Dempsey wanted off, they should have left Derek in DC for the season, and then had the wonderful, can't live without you, reunion at the end of next season. I feel like this whole show -- 11 seasons -- has been about Meredith overcoming her crappy childhood and learning to trust and love -- so this plot twist just puts 11 years of work into the crapper. Then again, I'm still a little pissed that Sam and Diane didn't end up together. Life has enough shittiness -- if we're going to stick with characters for like a decade, they should give us our g-d happy ending for them. |

It will be interesting to see how Meredith handles life without Derek. Yes Ellis also ended up alone, but that was her own doing. I think this will be the time to show us how different Meredith is from her mother.
I would assume they steer the storyline away from her for a little, while she adjusts. The preview for next week shows her wanting to go somewhere... Maybe Boston? |
| I read that Dempsey had become quite the diva. History tells us that Rhimes doesn't put up with that crap. |
Agree. That frustrated me about Army Wives. I felt like they were constantly like "oh, don't know what to with character xyz. Time for another death!" Grey's was sad. After that his sister should have been called. Why couldn't they take him to Seattle Grace? He was on the ferry before. Couldn't have been that far away. Or another trauma center? Poor Derek. Didn't see the previews for next week because I watched it online. |

I agree with PP that Meredith would have called Amelia to say goodbye to him. In the previews, it appears that she gets the news while at work.
Kind of sloppy that such a smart, pragmatic guy like Derek would sit in the middle of the street searching for his phone immediately after responding to a horrific accident. And I thought there wasn't any cell service in that area, so why was his phone ringing? I didn't like that the only one Meredith lit into was the one person who tried to do the right thing. I realize that she didn't know that, but I would have liked to see that play out differently. I think we all know that Mer will end up pregnant. But I thought they could not conceive? Or at least were very unlikely to conceive? I read an interview with Patrick. He was very vague about departing the show. Kind of wondering if he will finish out his contract through dreams, flashbacks, and such. |
| ^^ *Agree, not after. |
|
I remember an interview with Dempsey from a few years ago where he said being on Grey's is great because it's a steady paycheck and not something he saw himself giving up.
I've watched since the beginning, but without Derek and Cristina it might be time to say goodbye. I'm also probably giving up on Scandal. Just too much violence and gore and B613. |
| AND since he was somehow not mangled beyond recognition, it stands to reason that the car and his belongings weren't either, so they should have identified him and contacted Meredith much sooner. At the very least, they could have called area hospitals to ask about a surgeon named Derek who is unaccounted for. |
|
| I cried. |
But she learned earlier this season that she could be ok alone. That's a powerful thing to realize. |
| I won't watch any more. He was the only good part of the show. The rest is so ridiculous. And Shonda was a jerk for killing him off. |
