Do you take down your patio umbrella when it storms?

Never. I keep it closed and tied (buckled?) closed but leave it up. It's attached to a huge heavy a** base. I've never had an issue (knock on wood).

+1 this has worked for us for 25+ years. Very heavy base. Always close it when not in use.

Agree. One time Margarita forgot. She had to run out there at the start of the storm and bring it down. She learned her lesson that day, I trust such an oversight will not happen again in the future.

If your table is glass, then yes you should take it down if you don't want your table tipping over.

OMG, I laughed so hard.

I close it but don’t put it inside. It is very heavy and sits inside a heavy base in the center of a metal table.

Thank you for lowering my blood pressure.

No I take it down cause I am up on the 7th floor and I don't want it blowing away and hurting someone or being lost.

I do because if the winds are strong enough, the umbrella will be yanked out of the base, bent, and end up in a neighbor's yard. Yes...this has happened to me.

+1

Ours went airborne and it was closed. It was like a tornado. Pretty scary.

We bring ours in the garage and it lasts longer too not getting weathered.

I make sure it is tied shut. Otherwise the wind can get ahold of it and it becomes a spinning weapon.

Don't leave the umbrella open during a storm, it can blow or be damaged. Fine to leave in place when closed.

Struck by lightening? That’s why you thought people took them down? Wow.

As long as it's closed, I think it's okay to have the umbrella upright in the table, unless the storm is expected to bring very strong winds.

This is what we do, also our umbrella us in a hole in a table with concrete slabs holding down the base. So for a regular storm it’s likely to blow away. For a big hurricane or something we’d move it into our shed. Had never really thought about whether it’s a lightning hazard.

It's probably a 40' tall umbrella.
