best school in Maryland

Avoid all public schools in MCPS or PGPS. HCPS are wonderful. Many good privates in Maryland.

Private is not an option. There is no time to get an IEP now as it's already April. Her needs arent' extensive-- think along the lines of some speech or extra time to complete assignments. Howard is a definite possibility.

I have heard ESS and "a school down county".

Can anyone name any specific schools?? Take out the SN aspect and just comment on a school in general. Thanks

Just FYI, the "stellar" schools are mostly white. Not all white.

I like Atholton the best for "Columbia" school (not west county which is country, wealthy, and mostly white).

I think avoiding all public schools in MCPS is a little extreme. If I were in OP's shoes, I would first wait to find work location and price range for a home, then search at specific schools in that area. There are many good schools in MCPS but it is so huge. Once you can focus in on one area, you can pick one neighborhood over another based on schools.

Good grief. Such generalizations!

Avoid DCUM. I (thankfully) don't know a single real person who has opinions like I read here.

Never mind ESS then

River Hill, Centennial, Atholton, Mt. Hebron.

OP, HoCo has great support services for SN kids. Depending on where you work, it's a long commute. We moved out of Montgomery County to HoCo because of the schools and we're happy where we are (not in one of the high schools above). Our elementary and middle school are fantastic and our high school is steadily improving.

Are the high schools stellar, or are their demographics what the DCUM considers good?

River Hill - 56% white, 26% Asian (82%), FARMS 6%
Centennial - 48% white, 35% Asian (83%), FARMS 9%
Atholton - 50% white, 18% Asian (68%), FARMS 8%
Mt. Hebron - 50% white, 27% Asian (77%), FARMS 12%

IT is funny that you helpfully put Asian and White together. This is all good until Asian becomes 70% like that in TJ, then nobody lumps them together with whites any more.

Well, it's complicated. For the purpose of "good school", you should add Asian and white. However, yes, at some percentage of Asian higher than 30% but lower than 70%, it becomes a good school with an asterisk.

(I want be clear that I, personally, find this thinking deplorable.)

I'm not sure what your point is. Three of those schools are in US News top high schools in MD. Yes they are predominantly white and Asian. By the metrics of testing, college admissions and GPAs, they were ranked amongst the best. As I stated in my post, we moved because my child needed more support than what she could get in Montco. We're happy where we are (which is not in one of those school pyramids).

My co-worker is very unhappy with HoCo special ed services in elementary school. Not saying MoCo is better but I don't think HoCo is the answer. They have "better" demographics" but that doesn't mean they provide a better education.

One testimonial can't be used to judge an entire county system.

Just adding more information as did an earlier positive HoCo poster..that is what people do on these boards..not expecting OP to only take mine as fact.
