It is incredibly important for you to find out if the GAD is the root problem or a symptom of a different problem. Kids who have learning disabilities and attention issues also have anxiety but if you treat the anxiety without looking for the root cause then you will run around in circles for years and never solve the problem.

Excellent point!

True, but even if you know which LDs your kid has and they also have anxiety, you can still be running around in circles.

???

I disagree. If you have the info then you can't run around in circles unless you are dealing with incompetence. That's a different story.

NP - OP, what the PPs are trying to say is that GAD is usually a comorbidity with a more serious underlying LD or neurological problem. For example, we also sensed our DS was "anxious". But it wasn't until we did many expensive rounds of full testing did we get the final story (which is absolutely true upon observation of child as an adult) Aspergers/ ADHD/Anxiety. There is no doubt DS is autistic. But as a child you would have never known, except that he was anxious. So PPS are just saying be sure that you have done the best testing possible and then repeat every three years because diagnoses may change.
