Duke. While both are obviously excellent schools, the resources are just better at Duke. More money, better endowment, and I think a slightly less fratty culture (though both schools have a Greek presence). I'm also partial to the look of the Duke campus over UVA, but that just my personal preference.

OP, if you're concerned about the UVA culture and about safety and behavioral mores, please don't forget Duke's own very unfortunate, very recent history. The current bad press on UVA isn't a reason to assume that Duke is somehow better. Were it my choice, which it is not, I would select UVA without hesitation. And either way, you are considering two excellent universities.

OP here: Thank you all for your inputs. DD just got accepted to Stanford last night which is her #1 school. She will go to Stanford University.
