Good Charter or DPS in Columbia Heights/16th Street Heights with Pre-K program

Anonymous
Actually I spoke the leadership at Sheperd Park ES and they are trying to increase the enrollment and would add the extra Pre-K class if there are enough folks applying. I know there has been issues in keeping principals but Rhee has her eye on this successful school that has met AYP every year. Also DPR is redoing the playground and fields starting this summer that is a great addistion and resource for the school.

There is another HD Cooke meeting this Thursday (4/2)

If you have applied to HD Cooke (a DCPS located near the intersection of 17th & Columbia,
NW) for the 2009-2010 school year (or are in boundary and would like to learn more), you
are invited to a gathering at All Souls Church 1500 Harvard ST NW on Thursday, April 2nd.
Here's how this will work: there will be a "getting to know you" potluck dinner starting
at 6:30. Bring your kids (optional, but nice if you can do it) and bring a dish to pass.
Then, at 8:00 PM there will be a formal meeting for those who can stay - we will talk to
someone from dcvoice.org about her experience with an elementary school transformation
she took part in 40 years ago in the district, and will discuss preliminary questions
that we would like to ask the principal and PTA president.

This is an informal meeting for parents only. I think that a crucial thing that needs to
happen is that we all need to get to know each other. For me, the most important thing is
that my kids get to go to school with other kids
whose parents I know, so I would like to meet the parents who have applied in order to
support my decision-making process.

Just adding to the discussion. Centro Nia's DC Bilingual Public Charter School has been great. There are a lot of new teachers this year that are fantastic and that are staying (always a good sign), experienced and 'degreed'.

Our kids have been very happy so far and we intend to enroll again for next year. They have an Advanced Learning Options Program which is a weekly project based program for kids working above grade level, Destination Imagination (an after school team based problem solving program) and an active Parent association. I do believe they're working on reaching out to get a more diverse lottery pool. Contact the school directly for a tour at (202) 332-4200. The ratio is also great in Pre-K 3, Pre-K 4, and K it's 2 teachers and 2 teacher's assistants to 20 kids all the time. Grades 1 - 5 it's 2 teachers to 20.

They do need a better website to feature how great the school and organization.

One loophole with DCPS - after school has started, if there are spots during the year, it may be possible to get in OOB. They get paid per head and will try to fill classes, even the uppper NW schools.

Need for a better website is right -- they still have up their 2009-2010 lottery application! (Is their 2010-2011 application available online? I can't find it.)

The reason you can not find the DCPS 2010 - 2011 OOB/ Pre K lottery form is because it does not open until later this month.

Check back.

DC Bilingual is a charter, not DCPS.

Just wanted to correct a PP, the OOB lottery deadline is not this week. Please see the below (taken from the DCPS website):
Submit an application to the Pre-school and Pre-k Lottery for school year 2010-2011.

The lottery application period begins on January 28, 2010 and ends on February 28, 2010 at 11:59 PM. On January 28, 2010, the lottery application will become available on dcps.dc.gov. The lottery application must be completed online; no paper applications will be accepted. If you do not have internet access, please call or visit the nearest DCPS school for assistance in submitting your application.

DC Bilingual is still a charter, still not DCPS.
