yes, our elementary school had indoor recess too, because the blacktop wasn't shoveled. Well, let them play in the snow, then! Or the slush. Just get them outside for god's sake.
Outdoor time should be a priority. I don't understand how people in the education business can fail to understand the importance of that. |
| Inside all 3 days this week. I just called. Too wet outside. I am beyond pissed off! |
| Our also was inside for recess yesterday and today - principal said the blacktop was too wet/slippery for even just blacktop only recess. |
|
Perhaps it's not just a matter of the blacktop surface itself, but also the pathway the children take to get to such area. When my children were in elementary school, they had to walk around the building on the grass to get to the playground, and I wouldn't have wanted them walking through mud to get there.

We aren't talking about a playground out in the grass but at least blacktop. The kindergarten doors lead directly to the one blacktop and a mulched small playground. The rest of the school can get to 2 other blacktops directly from doors or a small walkway. |
It is going to be muddy for the next 2 weeks. Heck most of March/April it is muddy. Put your little snowflake in play clothes and boots. There is no way kids should be inside everyday because of a little mud. |
+100. Think about what you said for 1 second. Sad state of affairs that you don't want kids outside at all in this weather bc of a little bit of mud?! |
Danger: Overprotective Boring Mom alert!! |
Playing in the mud and soggy grass, while very fun, does even more damage to the grass. It's a facilities consideration. |

Inside here as well. Our principal makes a big deal of saying that the kids go out as much as possible but it's total BS. They have been inside when the temperature has hit 35, when there's a little drizzle, when there are small puddles on the ground, etc.
Our DC2 who is in preschool has probably been outside three times as many times as DC1 who is in elementary and the schools are less than a mile apart. |
| My son's class went outside but b/c it was too muddy, they took a walk around the building a few times. Better than nothing! |
The issue is with all of the mud that is tracked into the building when the kids come back inside. It's not as simple as vacuuming. It's a very large mess and it takes quite some time to clean. We sit on the floor in the classroom all throughout the day, and sitting on a dirty, mud covered floor is a problem. The last time we had a fire drill, the kids' shoes were covered in mud from walking across the field. Upon returning to our classroom, I had them all take off their shoes and line them up outside of our classroom door. Not the best situation, but I would rather have kids in socks as opposed to mud EVERYWHERE. |
| We are still inside too. Which is ridiculous because it was gorgeous today. we went to the park after dinner! |
| Our kindergartener was outside on Monday and again today. We had rain during recess time on Tuesday. |
Can you reread the post, they needed to walk to the playground in some grass, not play in the grass. We have a catholic school up the street from us. They have coned off part of the parking lot and have been playing in there. Why can't the schools do this? Lazy! |
